Germany won't send weapons to Ukraine (Merkel)

BUDAPEST -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said that her country will not supply weapons to Ukraine.

She added that Berlin supports negotiations and a diplomatic solution to the conflict between Ukrainian and pro-Russian forces in the east of Ukraine.

Merkel spoke during a press conference in Budapest, following her meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, that "the conflict in Ukraine cannot be resolved by military means," AP reported.

The conflict has so far resulted in the deaths of more than 5,100 people, while 900,000 have been displaced from their homes.

Despite a ceasefire reached in September and a period of relative peace which lasted throughout December, the fighting has intensified in recent weeks.
