"... independence movements. When is it okay to secede? When is it not?..."

People's independence, freedom from all sorts of enslavement  and right to self-determination  are sacred. They constitute the Supreme Good for Humanity and should always be pursued till finally conquered. 

Yet,  if worse conditions prevail, after the secession, like ''out of the frying pan and into the fire'' or from ''Scylla to Charybdis'' and the people consequently come across severe socio-economic, physical and psychological losses, similar or different from the previous ones, then the timing was wrong and the 'factors'-'agents'-'events'  energised -reclaimed-involved  resulting in the secession were not the appropriate, healthy, fruitful ones.

Cui Bono in the short and the long-run? By Whom(entities) particularly and What(conditions) specifically, Why, How and When  is an independence movement organised-instigated?

Is it for the General Good?

These are the questions to be asked before and from those stem the relative scenarios to be examined aforehead.

This week Iraqi Kurdistan voted for its independence from the state of Iraq. So far, Israel is the only country to have expressed support for their cause. Iraq called the referendum illegal and unconstitutional. Iran and Turkey are in agreement, conducting joint military drills, and implementing measures against the Kurds to thwart their attempt to form an independent nation state. Even the U.S. won't recognize the move (officially, at least). But as Erdogan put it this weekend, "What are they thinking?"

Meanwhile, today Catalonia plans to go ahead with its own independence referendum, despite strong statements and actions from Spanish authorities, including legal, police, and cyber measures taken to discourage or stop the vote.
