Greek authorities are on alert after weapons and ammunition were
found at a Mosque in the city of Xanthi in the eastern Macedonia and
Thrace regions in the north of Greece. According to reports by newspaper
“Kathimerini”, Greek intelligence officers detected the weapons after
receiving tips and proceeded to investigate a Mosque in the village of
Iliopetra of the Topiros municipality. After entering the Mosque the
police discovered two hidden pistols, one of which had a silencer, as
well as a large number of bullets. The Imam was taken to the local
prosecutor, and according to protothema.gr he has been detained for
possession of illegal weapons. The pistols were sent to police
headquarters in Athens to see if they had been used in criminal
activities. Police also found a hunting rifle in the Mosque, while Greek
government officials and the Ministry for the Citizens’ Protection have
been informed. Just yesterday, a self-exiled former editor in chief of
Turkish newspaper had posted on his twitter feed that the number of
Turkish secret intelligence operatives had increased in Greece.
