Consider it in terms of just deductive logic. How can a high priced industry such as big pharma stay in business if they have declining numbers of customers aka patients? The business model is simple; make a profit. How to make a profit with patients? Plant seeds of disease that will manifest itself in 5-20 years later so you have a constant production line of present and future customers aka patients for “treatment” aka “death by medicine”.
How to make a profit with less customers? It is not possible because eventually your business will go out of business because you cannot make a profit. The self feeding cycle requires profits so that shareholders can get a return on their investment. No profit equals no future investment in your business.
Therefore, your job as big pharma is to make sure people aka patients are produced for present and future profit. The production of patients is key to your business being profitable. Without patients you have no customers and therefore no business.

Furthermore, the more expensive the drug you treat patients with the larger the return on your investment and hence more profit. How can big pharma stay in business staying selling vitamin pills for a few pennies each when their business costs are so high that they need to sell drugs at a few dollars per pill or a few hundred dollars per bottle? The simple answer is it cannot.
They require really sick patients so they can sell them really expensive drugs for large profits. That is the basic “healthcare” business model as engineered and imagined by big pharma.
If you are in the business of making a cancer drug and then nobody is getting that cancer how can you possibly stay in business? Simple – you cannot.
The only way for your big pharma business to stay in business and thrive with profits is for you to ensure that particular type of cancer is widespread and continues to metastasize in patients so in a few years they will be ready for their treatment with your drugs. Plants the seeds early so you can sow the benefits and reap the profits later in the business cycle so your business stays in business and your shareholders continue to investment in your business and your stock value keeps going up slow and steady.
