The United Nations says its Yemen envoy is hoping to achieve progress on a temporary ceasefire deal by the end of Friday, but talks could continue through the weekend. The talks hit a deadlock on its fourth day because the parties could not agree on the numbers in their delegations. For equality purposes the number was set by the U-N at ten.
But the opposition delegation doubled this limit as it included representatives from different opposition groups like the Houthis. And all of them insisted on being present. One opposition delegate said they are not optimistic about the talks because Saudi Arabia is absent.
He said negotiations with Saudi Arabia to stop airstrikes is necessary to achieve an overall ceasefire, rather than the two-week one over Ramadan proposed by the UN chief. Saudi Arabia has been leading an airstrike campaign in Yemen against the Houthis since March.
