US hijacked by special interests: International lawyer

The US has been “hijacked by special interests,” an international lawyer in Indonesia says.
US President Barack Obama’s approval of a bill that gives Congress the power to reject a nuclear deal with Iran displays how the US has been “hijacked by special interests,” an international lawyer in Indonesia says.
“What we have is a US dominated, corporatist new world order which…has been hijacked by the special interests which own Congress,” Barry Grossman told Press TV on Saturday.
Obama signed legislation Friday that gives lawmakers in Washington the authority to review and potentially reject a final nuclear deal with Iran.
The legislation overwhelmingly passed the House of Representatives and Senate earlier this month. The measure will allow for a 30-day review of any final nuclear deal with Iran.
During the reviewing period, Obama would be able to waive those Iran sanctions that were imposed by the executive branch. However, the president would have to leave in place sanctions that Congress had previously drafted.
The bill would also force the Obama administration to certify, on a regular basis, that Iran is abiding by the terms of any nuclear deal.
The US and its negotiating partners reached a framework nuclear agreement with Iran in Switzerland on April 2.
Tehran and the P5+1 group – the US, Britain, France, China, Russia and Germany – are currently working to draw up a final accord by the end of June.
“The Congressional process contemplated by this bill was not conceived in good faith. The aim of the bill is to sabotage the multilateral P5+1 agreement which has been provisionally made,” Grossman said.
“The USA cannot be trusted to honor any agreement,” he added. “It is no secret that Congress in general and the Republicans in particular, consider themselves far more beholding to their paymasters than to their own constituents.”
“It is also no secret that the Israeli lobby and the arms industry are two of the biggest paymasters in Washington, both of whom have been working for years to achieve their aim of a full scale conventional war with Iran,” Grossman noted.
