The Presidential Guard parading during today's National Freedom and Independence Celebrations,
on the occasion of 194 years since the 25th of March , 1821.The members of the Guard are called
Evzonαes -Εύζωνες. According to Homer, this is how Achilles' soldiers were named. The word consists of two parts: Ev -Εύ- meaning well, good . And of the word zono- ζώνω- meaning wearing by wrapping around the body.Must have been a particularly beautiful way to wear a war outfit.
Anyhow , this is how the centuries 'deliver ' the Evzones to the present-day , after some thousands of years and many more wars. Three Cretans wearing the traditional 'vrakes' were there too. m.l.p.
